The Good Play of T. Newman
Playing against John Roberts at Leicester Square, in the
first half of October, T. Newman, aged 17, received a start
of 5,000 in 18,000 and won by 724 points. Continuing the
game until the end of the second week the final scores
stood: Newman 19,948, Roberts 19,518, so that this youth of
17, in the first fortnight’s match
of his life, actually averaged 623
points per session against a
weighty opponent who at the same
time was averaging 813.
In the course of the match (in
which Roberts gave extremely fine
displays, and made the first 500
break of the season) Newman
scored his record of 272 on a standard
table.
Newman’s supporters are now
challenging Inman and Harverson
to a 9,000 up game with 3,000
start for £50 a side. The handicapping
here is a little rough and
ready, but Newman, on his recent
form against Roberts, should do well with either of the two
leading professionals named.
