AMATEURS IN A BREAK COMPETITION
At the conclusion of each afternoon session of the professional
tournament at the Soho Square Salon, the amateurs
who are present amongst the spectators have the opportunity
of competing for the handsome prize of two cues in a
polished wood case, which is awarded weekly to the maker
of the largest break from a set-up position. The red ball
is placed on the billiard spot, the white ball on the centre
spot, and the cue ball near to the left top pocket on the
natural angle line for the cross in-off.
The most recently-declared results have been as follows:
Fifth Week: Number of competitors, 65. Total score,
388. Average, 5.96. Best breaks: 22, and 17 three times.
Sixth Week: Number of competitors, 105. Total score,
436. Average, 4.15. Best breaks: 33, 22, 20, 15.
Seventh Week: Number of competitors, 38. Total score,
385. Average, 10.13. Best breaks: 36, 32, 26, and 20
twice.
The highest break to date has been 50. There has also
been a 39.
