“Only three players have entered for the Amateur
Championship from the North Eastern DistrictMr. E. Bell, of
Newcastle (who is a seasoned contestant in this event), Mr. F.
R. Lord, of Redcar, and Mr. C. M. Helyer, of Stockton. Such
large centres as Middlesbrough, Darlington, and the
Hartlepools are unrepresented, although there are many fine
players in these districtsquite above the average of those
who compete annually. The smallness of the entry may be
taken as showing that local interest in the Amateur
Championship is at vanishing point. The only way hi which
most of the local players could compete would be for the clubs
or leagues with which they are associated to, be sporting
enough to pay their entrance fees and other expenses”.
